Apex Mine (Dixie Mine; Apex-Dixie Mine ), Jarvis Peak, Tutsagubet District, Beaver Dam Mountains, Washington County, Utah, USA

Distinctively unique as a specimen can be, this Azurite and Malachite combo can only have come from the Apex mine, an old copper mine, worked since the 1880's near St. George, Utah. After the mine was abandoned in the 1960's, it was briefly re-opened in 1985 as a possible source for rare elements: Germanium and Gallium. In the older, upper workings a number of epimorphs like this one were found. The odd shape is due to the fact that the Azurite and Malachite grew as a coating on a long and slender needle of Selenite. Subsequent to the deposition of the copper minerals, conditions changed and the Selenite was dissolved away leaving only a hollow tube of Azurite and Malachite. It is now possible to see all the way through the specimen, even though it is only .25 inch (.6 cm) in diameter or less, over its 5 inch (12.7 cm) length. In superb condition, considering virtually all casts, even this one, have had their ends broken off. It bears an accession number "34" which correlates with a label from the Bill & Carol Smith Collection, that states that it was purchased from the Roberts on 20 April 1986. In addition there is a label from Roberts Minerals.
    Overall measurements: 5 x .25 x .25 inches (12.7 x .6 x .6 cm).

Provenance: Mountain Minerals [Hoppel # D1280]
