Description

Azurite, Malachite
Liufengshan Mine, Guichi District, Chizhou Prefecture, Anhui Province, China
26.7 x 19.1 x 7.6 cm (10.5 x 7.5 x 3.0 in)

This highly sculptural, and large specimen of Azurite and Malachite boasts the famous "electric blue" color that is occasionally seen in the top specimens from the Liufengshan Mine in Eastern China. This color is localized to the broad, shimmering section of microcrystalline Azurite that fully coats the center of the Malachite matrix, and only seeing the specimen in person truly demonstrates the remarkable glimmering effect that this specimen has. This main section of Azurite is flanked by two peripheral segments of a darker color, mainly Malachite matrix coated in chunkier, larger crystals of Azurite. When inspected closely, these crystals even have a rosette-esque form. On the right side of the plate is a deposit of botryoidal Malachite, with a velvet-smooth texture that contrasts the blue mineral nicely. Such a large and pristine example of Liufengshan Azurite is special indeed. This specimen has no repairs or restorations, and comes with a custom milled acrylic base.

Ex. Mark Pospisil collection.
Ex. Thomas Everitt collection (#TAE-377).
