Styrian Erzberg, Eisenerz, Styria, Austria

The "Flowers of Iron" as the old name "Flos Ferri" translates, refers to the "flowers" growing from the walls of an Iron mine in Austria that has been worked for centuries. In truth, the strangely contorted coraloidal forms are a variety of Aragonite more properly called "helictites." Formed in very similar fashion to the stalactites and stalagmites decorating thousands of caves worldwide, they require specific conditions in order to grow and so, are uncommon. This example is better than most because it includes a bit of the wall rock that it grew from and therefore exhibits a bit more of the total picture of formation and growth. Pure white in color and always opaque, these old classics are now found in collections that value their ancient history as well as their sinuous appearance. This one was formerly in the collection of Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History. Its condition is normal for such specimens, with unavoidable breaks to some protruding "branches." Comes with a custom acrylic base.
    Overall measurements: 8 x 4.5 x 5 inches (20.3 x 11.4 x 12.7 cm).

Provenance: David Crawford, Field Museum of Natural History [Hoppel # D1742]
