Chumar Bakhoor, Hunza Valley, Gilgit District, Gilgit-Baltistan (Northern Areas), Pakistan

The ingenuity of the people who dig specimens is an awesome thing to see in action: mining equipment fashioned from bicycle parts; pumps made from castoff plastic; explosives made from commercial weed-killers - the list goes on and on. Unfortunately, the same innovative spirit also gets applied to "specimen enhancement" a term that covers a multitude of things, all done to improve the economic prospects of a specimen of sub-prime appearance. Here, a perfectly decent large Aquamarine crystal had its prospects improved by the not so clever ruse of gluing additional Muscovite blades onto the base and sides of the crystal. To all who handled it, it appeared to be a good "matrix specimen." Our suspicions were aroused by the slightly odd base for those Muscovites, and so, the specimen was placed in a solvent bath overnight. The following morning saw the Aquamarine surrounded by an alluvial fan of no longer attached mica blades. Since the Aquamarine was decent in its own right, we decided to offer it unadorned, so to speak, along with a separate container of the now divorced Muscovite crystals. Purchasers will thereby have the option of exhibiting the Aquamarine by itself, or with the "optional equipment" provided by the artisans of Pakistan. The Aquamarine is sizable at almost 4 inches in height and 2.5 inches across. It is in excellent condition, with but one tiny nick to one edge. Luster is glassy and color is the usual light blue shown by Pakistani Aquamarines.
    Overall Measurements: 3.99 x 2.96 x 2.91 inches (10.14 x 7.54 x 7.4 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Ex. Hoppel Collection #D0500, ex. G. Witters Minerals
