Description

Aquamarine (Exceptional crystal)
Skardu Area, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
8.2 x 3.3 x 2.3 cm (3.24 x 1.29 x 0.93 in)

The most important qualities of "gem" mineral species are color, clarity, and form: this specimen checks off all three criteria with flying colors. The prism of this single Aquamarine crystal, at a rather large 3.3 centimeters thick, has great color, with a sky blue hue that is consistent throughout the body. Compared to the teal-blue colors of most Pakistani Aquamarines, this specimen is richer, and more of a "pure" blue, quite like the material from Vietnam. The pristine quality of the faces and edges are almost too good to believe, but light growth patterns, tiny bevel modifications, and thin frosted zones on the faces prove otherwise. Inside the crystal there are very few inclusions relative to the crystal size, with a few subtle but interesting frosted zones, like stacked disks. Overall, this is an exceptional crystal for any locality in the world, and a perfectly "textbook" example. There is an area of contact on the back of the specimen, but this does not affect clarity or displayability.
