All of the exquisite Indian Zeolite minerals, and their associates, are products of what are called the Deccan Traps: lava flows big enough to bury California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and ... Vermont, under 1.25 miles of lava. Recent evidence has shown that some of the Deccan flows occurred at the same time as the Chicxulub asteroid: an extinction event that marks the K-T Boundary. It has been proposed that stresses imposed by the impact, caused renewed volcanic activity and prolonged the eruptions. If this proves true, then at least some of the Deccan Zeolites may owe their existence to an asteroid. Whatever the origin, it is conceded that the best examples of these minerals are from India. Way better than most, is this mixed cluster of Apophyllite and Stilbite from Jalgaon. The chief attraction of the piece is the enormous Apophyllite that towers over the rest of the group. It measures 3.5 x 1.5 x 1.33 inches (9 x 3.8 x 3.4 cm) and shows light yellow-green hue in the center, fading to colorless at the termination. Associated with the Apophyllite are numerous Stilbite "bow-ties" of pale salmon-pink color. Smaller, "tooth-like" pyramids of Apophyllite festoon the entire assemblage with accents of mirror-bright luster. The group looks great from any direction and the condition is excellent, with only very minor nicks. It comes with a custom base.
