Description

    AMETHYST
Pied Parada, Mun. de Tatatila, Veracruz, Mexico

Students of southwestern architecture will instantly recognize the Spanish term: "vigas" as the name for the hand-hewn beams that support the roof and ceiling of a traditional Pueblo adobe home. Which begs the question: "What does that have to do with Amethyst in Mexico?" It turns out that the first rancheros in the neighborhood of the Amethyst deposit, constructed a crude bridge of locally hewn beams to cross a nearby stream. Like so many things in rural areas, the name for an object - "vigas" becomes the name for the place where the object is - hence "Las Vigas" or "The Beams". It was several centuries after the beam making activity that the locals noticed the purple fragments weathering out of the volcanic rock in the neighborhood. They showed some of the material to Alfonso Ontiveros, who proceeded to purchase specimens and resell them. That was when the word got out, and the World came to buy. Organized efforts to produce the Amethyst swiftly resulted in artisanal mining operations and the usual squabbles over control of the sales and distribution of the unique specimens. Amidst the veritable raft of loose crystals and run-of-the-mill specimens, there have been a few of what some collectors call "Smokers," this being one of them. This specimen epitomizes what the finest of Las Vigas Amethyst should be. To begin with, it is a stabilized matrix specimen, not a loose group, with many more crystals than normal - bursting forth from the matrix like a flower. In addition, these crystals are far larger at 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) than ones typically found, AND they display luscious purple color and bright luster. As if that isn't enough, the group is in excellent condition, without the usual nicks to terminations and edges that seem to bedevil all Quartz specimens. This 'mind-blower' of a specimen may well be the best ever to come out of this locality.
    Overall Measurements: 5.43 x 5.51 x 4.33 inches (13.8 x 14.0 x 11.0 cm)
