Karur District, Tamil Nadu, India

It is interesting what a dose of hindsight can do in the mineral world. Here we have what is allegedly an Amethyst from the Himalayas of India. At the time that it was purchased, little or nothing was known about the true origins of the piece and assertions of Himalayan origin run rife, even today probably due to the perceived mystical connection that the Himalayas possess. It is only through hindsight that we can see that the specimen is actually from the Karur District many, many miles to the south. We know this because the fan-like habit of the 'scepter' type crystals is entirely in keeping with specimens that bear the correct locality data but only came to the market years later. The color is also very typical of Karur pieces as well; going from colorless and translucent at the base to transparent purple at the terminations. There is a minor amount of volcanic rock on the back of the piece - also consistent with Karur origin. There are a couple of damaged areas, but it is still a very nice Karur Amethyst specimen in fine condition.
