Amatitlan, Guerrero, Mexico
A couple of decades or so in the past, there was a significant strike of Amethyst made near Amatitlan in the state of Guerrero. The material recovered in that find was very distinctive in appearance. Virtually all were in the form of elongated prisms (for Amethyst), often accompanied by 'fans' of smaller, secondary crystals. The purple color tended to be concentrated in the lower 2/3 of the crystal with almost colorless regions at the terminations. "Phantom" zoning is common and the luster is 'waxy,' but still good enough to see through the crystals. All of these characteristics are shown by this example and, in addition, it is one of the few on a matrix of massive and micro-crystalline Quartz with no color. Traces of a second crystal broken before Homo sapiens ever learned to light fires, is off to the side of the main crystal. Condition is pristine with a complete absence of nicks normally seen on the terminations of these purple jewels.
