Description
AMETHYST FLOWER - "THE ESKIMO"Irai, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Like frost growing on a cold window, exotic flat crystal growths sometimes form on the black walls of cavities in Brazilian lava flows near the town of Irai. The 'flowers' as they are called, are chiefly formed of small amethyst crystals radiating out in a plane, from a common center. Why they grow only in two dimensions; no one knows. Normal diameter for a flower is 12 inches or under. This enormous example is over twice that at 24 ½ inches high by 16 inches across with a few finger-like crystals extending outward 7 inches above the surface of the plate. The color shades from a pale lilac with golden areas towards the center of the plate, fading to a colorless rim around the edges. The slightly enlarged edges combined with the overall outline gives the piece a form not unlike an Eskimo in a parka. This fine specimen is clean, sharp and undamaged, for size and quality, it dwarves all others from the region. A Custom acrylic base holds the specimen upright.
