"Matterhorn" Copper Specimen
    Keweenaw Peninsula
    Michigan, USA

Certain pieces simply stand out from the rest, and this big example of crystallized Copper with large crystals measuring up to 3 inches (7.6 cm) is one such specimen. The classic mineral, likely mined during the late 1800s heyday when the majority of massive Coppers came out of the Keweenaw Peninsula, was probably out of the Ojibway Mine, but a lack of verifiable provenance precludes a definitive conclusion. The dark and heavy piece, which is a weighty 7 lbs. (3 kg), features large, blocky crystals usually associated with the fissure mines in that area. An obviously old collection number of "105" is marked on the rugged specimen, and a feature of this unique piece is the attribute that is has a void passing through a portion of its center created where three crystals converged. This is one of those superlative pieces of historical significance that really needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. There is something special when viewing this sizable mineral from every angle, and the chunk has so much character that it is nearly impossible to decide on a single orientation. With such a one-of-a-kind specimen, it is hard to overstate the museum quality and collectability of the mineral.
