This specimen is a very nice example of the Odessa Meteorite that was found in 1922 in West Texas. The coarse, octahedrite is classified as a Main Group Iron of the IAB Complex. The impact crater was only the second impact crater to be identified in the United States, first recognized by the legendary figure Daniel Barringer who also did the same for Meteorite Crater in Arizona now renamed in his honor. This massive piece weighs 2.2 kilograms (4.8 pounds) and offers an elegant shape as well as pleasing, two-tone brown hues. The piece is rugged with some weathering and expected "flaking" due to the metallic nature of the Odessa. This is a fine specimen of the iconic Texas variety that is not often seen and prized by collectors.
