Description
NWA 1227 Meteorite SliceOrdinary Chondrite (LL3)
Northwest Africa
Found: 1999
This gorgeous, thin slice of NWA 1227 is simply amazing with colorful chondrules of various sizes all over the golden-brown chondrite. Classified as an ordinary chondrite LL3, this is one of the rarest of all, and it represents some of the most primitive remnants associated with the formation of our solar system. Off the main mass, this slice is an ideal example of the material. With a weight of only 24 grams, this slice is not massive by any means, but it has plenty of character and visual appeal. It is also quite sizable for the light weight. The least abundant group of stony meteorites are the LL chondrites, and the lower number LL3 is a rarity. Most LL chondrites are breccias, and this NWA 1227 does show a brecciated composition.
Overall Measurements: 3.50 x 2.07 x 0.11 inches (8.90 x 5.26 x 0.27 cm), weighs 24 grams
[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
