    NICKEL-IRON "METEORITE": TONY'S METEORITE
    Shamokin, Pennsylvania, USA

The world is full of people who have found a "meteorite" and, as has been noted by any number of researchers who study these things, virtually all turn out to be something else. That "something else" is often: Slag from smelter operations; Ferro-Manganese off of a railroad gondola car; "Bog Iron Ore," picked up while hiking; fragments of exploded ordnance; or Hematite from various mining operations, the list is endless and so is the line of people who are sure that they have a meteorite. Rarely, oh so very, very, rarely does something show up that just might be a meteorite. This is one of those rare items.

It was found in 1973 by a young fellow visiting his grandparents in Upstate Pennsylvania and like bored youngsters everywhere - Tony went out walking. Shamokin is at the western edge of the Anthracite Coal Region of North-Eastern Pennsylvania, where coal mining has been an important part of the area's economy for many years. Consequently, there are coal mines all over the place. Visiting the local strip mines to search for fossils and interesting "stuff" was one way for him to pass the time. One day while looking for fossils, etc., the young man chanced upon an odd rock that was obviously different from the normal rocks of the neighborhood. For one thing it was a lot heavier for its size than it should be (27 pounds or 12.25 kg) and it didn't look like the other rocks around. He took the odd rock home with him and kept it in his closet until he moved into his own home years later, where he started using it for a door-stop. One day, years later, while working a construction job at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, he happened to mention the odd rock to some of the researchers there. He told them that he thought that he had found a meteorite. They said, what most scientists at institutions say, "yeah, sure it's a meteorite (not)." But they did acquiesce to examine it . After doing so, they asked him to loan it to the Institute where it would be put on public display with his name on it, for their conclusion was that it was indeed a meteorite. He declined the offer and the piece went back to being a door-stop - until now. We have examined the piece and so far, it appears to be what the owner claims it to be, an oxidized meteorite that is definitely metallic under the surface rust, and magnetic as it should be for its weight. The rounded shape and size of the object argue against it being just a chunk of Iron or steel. There are other indications of its probable extra-terrestrial nature. No one thing proves that it is a meteorite, so the matter remains open to further investigation. The possibilities are: 1) It is a meteorite from a recent fall that ended up in the strip mine; 2) It is a meteorite that was part of the Anthracite coal bed and was removed by magnetic separation before coal crushing and discarded as "tramp Iron;" 3) It is a chunk of metallic Iron from some unspecified anthropogenic source that just happened to end up in a coal mine; and 4) It is anthropogenic and the story is made up. We offer it under the express condition that its nature and origin have yet to be conclusively proven. That opportunity can be yours. Come see it, and you decide.
