    Mesosiderite - MES
    Sahara Desert

The specimen now offered was purchased at a mineral show 2010 from a Moroccan dealer who may not have known what he had: a sample of a mesosiderite, a type of meteorite whose mechanism of formation still poses quite a mystery to scientists. Composed of largely equal amounts of stony and iron meteorite components, mesosiderites are one of two types of stony-iron meteorites. In pallasites (see lot 11034), stony olivine is crystalline and suspended in a nickel iron matrix; in mesosiderites, however, the stony and metallic components are breccias whose constituents were "welded" together as a result of repeated impact events in the depths of space. Some of the stony matter found in mesosiderites is eucritic material-which would imply such particles originated from the asteroid Vesta-but the chemistry of other components makes for a far more complex story that is not entirely understood. Mesosiderites are enigmas, and the current example is an uncommonly choice example.
    It measures 64 x 47 x 2mm (2.5 x 1.75 x 0.1 inches) and 19.10 grams.
