    Chelyabinsk Meteorite
    Ordinary Chondrite (LL5)
Chelyabinskaya Oblast', Russia (54°49'N, 61°07'E (approximate centroid)
    Fell: 15 Feb 2013; 3:22 UT

Here we have a Chelyabinsk LL5 Chondrite that shows a little more history than a simple individual. You will note the smooth, rounded surfaces covering most of the specimen. You will also note the comparatively rough and irregular surface at one end of the meteorite. The combination of the two says that the individual was somewhat larger during the early phase of atmospheric entry, and ablation was well under way when the enormous deceleration forces broke the mass apart. The story doesn't stop there, after the break-up, continued entry ablation caused the broken surface to start smoothing over the ragged edges of the break; a process that was halted by either impact or more likely - lack of the velocity needed to sustain melting. It landed with that incomplete process frozen in time for all to see.
    Overall Measurements: 2.0 x 1.5 x 1.4 inches (5.1 x 3.8 x 3.5 cm), weighs 90 gm (3.17 oz.)
    Offered at no reserve.
