The Sahara Desert, near the Moroccan/Algerian Border

This is a beautiful complete slice from one of the larger stone meteorites found in the Sahara. Its ebony matrix provides a dramatic contrast to the galaxy of nickel-iron grains which are suspended throughout. This complete slice is rimmed in fusion crust-the result of meteorite's blazing descent through the atmosphere. Meteorites are named after the locality to which they are "delivered" so that researchers can speak of a specific meteorite without any confusion as to the meteorite referenced. Thus, meteorites are named after rivers, streams, mountains, cities, counties or basically any geological feature or marker of civilization which allows the specimen to be distinguished. In the Sahara Desert where there are frequently few such markers, geological or otherwise, the Nomenclature Committee of the Meteoritical Society decided to number the meteorites found in what they designated as the North West Africa (NWA) corridor encompassing much of the Sahara. Thus, NWA 5974 is the 5974th meteorite to be classified that was recovered from this region, and this is an exquisite specimen of an uncommonly pristine meteorite. 280 x 154 x 3 mm (11 x 6 x 1/8 inches) and 618 grams (1.3 pounds).
