    Description

NWA 5717 - A PARTIAL SLICE OF AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT NEW METEORITE, SUBTYPE 3.05, UNCHANGED SINCE ITS ORIGINS IN THE GASEOUS SOLAR NEBULA
    CH-UNGR (Ungrouped Chondrite) Subtype 3.05
    Western Sahara

Of the tens of thousands of chondritic meteorites known to exist (meteorites which contain silica-rich spherules, which is to say most meteorites), there are just 14 which are unclassifiable and have been designated as being ungrouped (CH-UNGR). NWA 5717 is the only meteorite within this select group (and one of the only meteorites, period) which also features a 3.05 subtype, making it among the most primitive planetary matter known. Unlike 99.99% of all other meteorites, NWA 5717 is unchanged since its origins in the early solar nebula. NWA 5717 originates from a previously unknown parent body (making it unique) and entirely separately, it also happens to be an example of the most primitive planetary matter ever before encountered. Only six pounds of similarly primitive material was known to exist prior to NWA 5717's discovery. States researcher Dr. Anthony Irving of Washington University, "There will most certainly be a great deal of research done on 5717 in years to come." Devoutly sought-after by scientists, unmetamorphosed meteorites like NWA 5717 represent the raw ingredients from which our solar system formed. Accordingly, more than half of the NWA 5717 mass will be placed in institutions and very little material will be available to the collecting community. Containing two lithologies and loaded with chondrules, this is a fine partial slice of a meteorite from which other specimens will soon be in most major collections. Accompanied by the 2010 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference abstract, "The Extra-Ordinary Chondrite: NWA 5717." 43 x 30 x 2 mm (1¾ x 1 x 1/16 inches) and 9.114 grams.
