Description

Holbrook Meteorites (Group of 6)
Chondrite, L/LL6
Arizona, USA - (34° 54'N, 110° 11'W)
Witnessed Fall: 1912

This offering consists of a group of six whole fusion-crusted individual stones from the famous Holbrook, Arizona, fall of 1912. The witnessed fall was observed by residents of the small railroad town who heard a series of loud sonic booms as an asteroid fragment broke up in the mesosphere. Reportedly one local boy ran into his house exclaiming to his mother that it was "raining rocks" as an estimated +/- 15,000 of the small stones fell over what was then known as Aztec Yard. Small, rusted pieces are still found today. Meteorite pioneer and founder of the American Meteorite Laboratory Harvey H. Nininger visited the find site himself decades later, recovering numerous examples himself. The specimens in this important grouping each have a hand-painted number, making them even more historic, and the group has the provenance of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Four of the stones in this Lot can be seen pictured in Geoff Notkin's "Meteorwritings" column on Geology.com in the installment "How to Start a Meteorite Collection" and, along with the other two, exhibit a variety of sizes, an incredible dark fusion crust and a mix of smooth, irregular shapes. Holbrooks that are small and rounded are known as "peas" and are coveted by collectors.
Measurements: 0.85 x 0.74 x 0.57 inches (2.15 x 1.87 x 1.45 cm), weighs 16.5 grams total

Provenance: Ex. American Museum Of Natural History, New York City #1354, #1530, #1436, #3298, #1457, #3325, The Geoff Notkin Collection
