Description

Gold Basin Meteorite Split Pair
Chondrite, L4
Mohave County, Arizona, USA - (35° 52' 30"N, 114° 14' 0"W)
Found: November 24, 1995

Found in an area popularly known as a locality for Gold prospecting, the aptly named Gold Basin L4 Chondrite hails from the Mohave Desert region of northwestern Arizona in an extensive strewnfield. Discovered in 1995 by Professor Emeritus Jim Kriegh of the University of Arizona while using a metal detector prospecting for Gold, the location has produced numerous pieces of the popular meteorite. This exceptional split pair represents a stone weighing 300.9 grams found by expert meteorite hunter Twink Monrad which has been cut and then polished to reveal a colorful internal structure, complete with numerous golden metallic flecks. The two halves are nearly identical in weight, and the exteriors both display nice rocky textural features, with one being on the reddish side and the other a bit earthy. Monrad was a frequent hunting partner of Kriegh, and Geoff Notkin was his close friend and neighbor. Kriegh's mapping of the Gold Basin locality resulted in it being one of the best-mapped strewnfields in the world. Gold Basin appeared extensively in an episode of Notkin's Meteorite Men television show.
Measurements: 2.99 x 2.70 x 0.96 inches (7.59 x 6.87 x 2.43 cm), weighs 300.9 grams total

Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection
