    Chelyabinsk Meteorite
    Ordinary Chondrite (LL5)
Chelyabinskaya Oblast', Russia (54°49'N, 61°07'E (approximate centroid)
    Fell: 15 Feb 2013; 3:22 UT

A relatively recent meteorite fall and a widely witnessed event, the Chelyabinsk superbolide exploded over Russia in 2015, causing excitement, chaos, and damage for miles. The light was brighter than the Sun, and the energy released was some 30 times more than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima! This rather unimpressive looking specimen is an ordinary chondrite (LL5) but represents anything but something ordinary. For a Chelyabinsk example, this piece is actually quite aesthetic, with high visual appeal as fusion crust covers virtually the entirety of the exterior with only one major "open" section that reveals the complex granular interior of the stony meteorite type that also features impact melt and shock veins. The convex side has shallow indentations; while the concave side is flat yet rippled.
    Overall Measurements: 2.85 x 2.48 x 1.25 inches (7.23 x 6.30 x 3.17 cm), weighs 228 grams

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
