Chelyabinsk MeteoriteChondrite, LL5
Chelyabinskaya oblast', Russia - (4° 49'N, 61° 7'E)
Witnessed Fall: February 15, 2013; 3:22 UT
This unusually large and exceptional example of the famous Chelyabinsk Meteorite fell from the massive explosion of a "superbolide" fireball which 'rained' stones over the Chelyabinsk Oblast in Russia in 2013, immediately becoming the most widely-witnessed meteorite event in human history. The bright meteor had an uncharacteristic shallow flight path of long duration that allowed it to be captured on dashcams which are very popular in Russia. Following a series of in-flight explosions, a number of small meteorites rained down on the snow-covered ground outside of the city, which was rocked by a shockwave shortly after that shattered windows injuring an estimated 1,200 people marking the first time in recorded history of multiple individuals being injured by the effects of a meteorite. The largest extant piece punched a hole in a local frozen lake which divers recovered. Weighing 295.6 grams, the outstanding specimen is quite sizable in comparison to the typically small-size pieces seen, and this dark and shapely offering has excellent fusion crust. The blackish-brown stone has one relatively larger patch that reveals some of the internal aspects of the rock from space. This particular representation is pictured in Geoff Notkin's book How to Find Treasure from Space on Page 84. This is one uncommonly big and beautiful Chelyabinsk.
Measurements: 3.08 x 2.61 x 1.98 inches (7.82 x 6.64 x 5.02 cm), weighs 295.6 grams
Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection
