Description
Sterley Meteorite SlicePallasite, PMG
Texas, USA - (34° 12' 36"N, 101° 23' 24"W)
Found: 1950
The included monograph - which, by the way, was designed by Geoff Notkin - tells the remarkable story of the Sterley Pallasite, of which every piece is photographed, numbered, and documented in the printed work. The even more incredible story of how this particular specimen, weighing 62.4 grams, came to get back in the possession of Notkin is rather unbelievable. Sterley was discovered in 1950 by a farmer while plowing a field near Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. The meteorite was essentially rediscovered after the finder's son watched an episode of Notkin's show Meteorite Men and then noticed that his father had collected the very same material. He took the sample to the Center for Meteorite Studies for further study, and it was later purchased by Notkin, who kept this specific piece in his collection. The relatively small Total Known Weight of 1,725 grams for this fall makes any example of considerable size like this one something rather significant. Of great interest to science, examples of the small mass were immediately acquired by institutions like Harvard, Center for Meteorite Studies/Arizona State University, Royal Ontario Museum, Vienna Museum of Natural History, and Institute of Meteoritics at the University of New Mexico. This is likely the only piece of this rare and interesting pallasite available on the market. This represents an obscure Texas meteorite with an amazing backstory. Slice #ST-25 is gorgeous with an array of spectacular golden Olivine crystals, of which some are highly translucent. The superb and very rare offering comes with an Aerolite Meteorites specimen identification card as well as a Sterley monograph.
Measurements: 4.12 x 2.26 x 0.11 inches (10.46 x 5.74 x 0.29 cm), weighs 62.4 grams
Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection #ST-25
