SEYMCHAN TRANSITIONAL SLICE: HISTORY OF A METEORITE AT A GLANCE
    Pallasite, PMG
    Magadanskaya oblast', Russia (62° 54'N, 152° 26'E)
    Found: June 1967

Seymchan is a bit of an "odd duck" among meteorites. For starters, the original mass was found in a creek bed lying among the river rocks - not your normal place to look for such things. A few months after that discovery in 1967, a second piece was found not far away, and in 2004 more material was recovered in the vicinity. The creek bed location is only mildly odd; the seriously interesting thing about Seymchan is that it shows transitional areas where the meteorite shifts from having Olivine crystals to areas with no Olivine at all. What this means is that part of the fall material appears to be IIE Anomalous Coarse Octahedrite type and the rest (the Olivine bearing part) is pallasitic, which leads to a Pallasite, PMG classification. As a result, some specimens, like this one show both types in the same slice. One corner of the beautifully polished slice displays a great Widmanstätten pattern with no Olivine. Moving towards the opposite corner, there is a rapid shift to the high Olivine levels of a classic Pallasite. All of this is found in but one slice of a meteorite. This piece is accompanied by a label from the John D. Macdonald Collection.
    Overall Measurements: 9.88 x 8.25 x 0.16 inches (25.08 x 20.96 x 0.39 cm), weighs 704 gm (1 lb.8.83 oz.)

Provenance: Ex John D. Macdonald Collection

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
