    Description

    Seymchan Transitional Meteorite Slice
    Pallasite, PMG
    Magadanskaya oblast', Russia (62° 54'N, 152° 26'E)
    Found: June 1967

A most intriguing aspect of the Seymchan Meteorite is that some slices exhibit transitional areas, where the Meteorite shifts from having Olivine crystals to areas with no Olivine at all. What this means is that part of the Meteorite appears to be IIE Anomalous Coarse Octahedrite type, while the rest (the Olivine-bearing part) is pallasitic, which leads to a Pallasite, PMG classification. As a result, specimens, like this one show both types in the same slice: a rare occurrence that adds unique character and value to the specimen. A good portion of the beautifully polished slice displays a great Widmanstätten pattern with no Olivine, but rather quickly, it shifts rapidly to the high Olivine levels of a classic Pallasite on the edges. The slice has been carefully polished and etched to expose the octahedrite crystal pattern and to highlight the great contrast between the Olivine and the Nickel-Iron. Traces of the original exterior surface are exposed at the edges.
    Overall Measurements: 7.0 x 6.3 x 0.3 inches (17.8 x 16.0 x 0.7 cm), weighs 718 gm (25.32 oz.)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
