Description

    Seymchan Meteorite End Piece
    Pallasite, PMG
    Magadanskaya Oblast, Russia (62° 54'N, 152° 26'E)
    Found: June 1967

This end piece reveals the best attributes of the internal crystalline structure and external features of a Seymchan Iron Meteorite. The first masses of Seymchan were discovered by geologists in the 1960s. Identified as Meteorites, they were named Seymchan after a nearby village in the Magadan district of Siberia-the location of Stalin's infamous gulags. Some Seymchan specimens are rich in Olivine, while others are devoid of any. This example is the latter. Seymchan Meteorites also contain high levels of Iridium, the second densest and most corrosion-resistant element known. The intricate latticework visible on the cut and polished surface of this select example is the natural crystalline pattern of the two principal components of Iron Meteorites, the nickel-iron alloys Kamacite and Taenite. The reverse external surface was cleaned, resulting in a lustrous patina ranging in hue from charcoal to silver.
    Overall Measurements: 5.75 x 4 x 1 inches (14.6 x 10.16 x 2.54 cm), weighs 2.5 lbs (1.13 kg.)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
