Description

NWA 5549 - INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR REVEALED IN END PIECE OF A STUNNING SILICATED-IRON METEORITE
    IAB-MG (Silicated Iron)
    Northwest Africa

Meteorites are named after the locality at which they are found - typically a city, town or geological feature. When none of the aforementioned exists, for example in the world's great deserts, meteorites are named after the grid in which they were recovered. So, NWA 5549 is the 5549th meteorite to be classified from the North West African grid of the Sahara Desert. First found in 2008, NWA 5549 was described by UCLA's Dr. John Wasson, the world's foremost expert on iron meteorites. A year later, the largest specimen from this same event was recovered which is the source of this end piece. Offered now is one of the largest specimens, if not the largest, of the NWA 5549 event. The meteorite's external surface and internal structure - angular silicates suspended in a nickel-iron matrix-are featured. With a gleaming metallic face and a convex reverse, this striking tabletop piece is accompanied by a custom armature.
    It measures 8.75 x 7.5 x 1.75 inches (224 x 188 x 45 mm) and weighs 11 pounds (4.95 kg).
    Provenance: Macovich Collection of Meteorites

    Estimate: $13,000 - $16,000.
