Description

GLORIETA MOUNTAIN - PARTIAL SLICE OF A FABLED AMERICAN METEORITE
    Stony-Iron - PAL-ANOM (Pallasite)
    Glorieta Mountain, New Mexico

Similar to the previous lot, this partial slice is also from the main mass of the fabled Glorieta Mountain pallasite. While pallasites are extremely rare, Glorieta Mountain is rarer still because it is chemically and morphologically anomalous. Seen here are Glorieta Mountain's signature sulfide inclusions amidst bright, translucent crystals of olivine and peridot (birthstone of August) which are seemingly enveloped by bands of kamacite and taenite-the two alloys of nickel-iron that comprise the latticework of iron meteorites. The crystalline structure seen here would be present in the previous specimen had it not been finished to a high polish, like the reverse of the specimen now offered. 69 x 77 x 3 mm (2.75 x 3.0 x 0.12 inches) and 55 grams.

    Estimate: $2,000 - $2,500.
