Description

END PIECE OF THE FUKANG PALLASITE
    Pallasite, PMG
    Fukang, Xinjiang Uygur Province, China (44° 26'N, 87° 38'E)
    Found: 2000

Pallasites are meteorites that originated from the core-mantle boundary of an asteroid destroyed at the very beginning of our solar system, some 4 billion years ago. They are made up of a combination of silvery Nickel-Iron and dense silicates - usually Olivine or Peridot, as the gem version of Olivine is called. This combination of beautiful gemmy crystals of Peridot, contrasting against their silvery matrix, make Pallasites the most beautiful of all meteorites, and Fukang is considered to be the most aesthetic of the Pallasites. Fukang is further distinguished by the fact that it possesses the largest crystals of Olivine found in any of the Pallasites. First found in 2000, only two specimens of Fukang were recovered, and these have been painstakingly sliced and polished, often requiring 40 hours of work to create these beautiful examples of interstellar art. This superb end piece exhibits the original dark red oxide fusion crust on one side with the Olivine crystals visible as glassy areas exposed on the original surface of the meteorite. The three cut and polished faces display very large and beautifully transparent Olivine crystals, ranging in hue from emerald green to yellow-green.
    Overall Measurements: 11.6 x 9.1 x 7.9 inches (29.46 x 23.11 x 20 cm), weighs 2.95 kg (6 lbs., 8 oz.)
