Pallasite - PMG
    Magadan District, Russia

This is a most unusual presentation of what has become a well-distributed meteorite that is among the most rust-resistant of all iron meteorites-the result of its high concentration of iridium, the second densest element and most corrosion-resistant metal known. This complete slice was derived from a meteorite that was part of a meteorite shower that occurred in the Magadan district of Siberia-the locality of Stalin's infamous gulags. First found in the 1960s, Seymchan meteorites were named after a nearby village and initially classified as a member of the rare IIE subgroup. Further expeditions to Seymchan resulted in the recovery of additional specimens, and when it was determined that 20% of all specimens contained crystalline olivine and peridot, it was reclassified as a pallasite. The current offering is a very rare slice containing deep green crystals-a rarity for specimens of Seymchan or any pallasite. Only a handful of slices of this variety of Seymchan exist; the mass from which this slice was derived is now at the Center for Meteorite Studies at the Arizona State University-the largest university collection of meteorites in the world. Studded throughout with deep green crystals in a nickel-iron matrix, this is a fascinating and most atypical example from the Seymchan event. Provenance: Macovich Collection, New York City.
    It measures 162 x 98 x 3mm (6.25 x 4 x 0.1 inches) and 278.83 grams.
