Pallasite - PMG
    Magadan District, Russia

This unusual complete slice originates from an iron meteorite found in the Magadan district of Siberia-the locality of Stalin's infamous gulags. First found in the 1960s, Seymchan meteorites were named after a nearby village and classified as members of the rare IIE subgroup. Further expeditions to Seymchan resulted in the recovery of additional specimens, and Seymchan was reclassified as a pallasite when it was determined that 20% of all specimens contained crystalline olivine-as seen in the specimen now offered. Seymchan meteorites also contain high levels of iridium, the second densest element and most corrosion-resistant metal. The current offering is a gorgeous transitional slice. Neither completely comprised of metal, nor filled with a scattering of crystals throughout, this specimen evidences the transitioning of an iron meteorite into a crystal-rich pallasitic meteorite. Studded with extraterrestrial olivine and peridot crystals in one area, and continuous nickel iron latticework in another, this is a fascinating, unconventional example.
    It measures 7 x 5.75 x 0.2 inches (181 x 145 x 3 mm) and weighs 1 pound (458.74 grams).
    Provenance: Macovich Collection of Meteorites
