    Libyan Desert Glass
Libyan Desert Glass Area, Great Sand Sea, Western Desert, Egypt

Back when the border of Libya and Egypt was pretty hard to locate due to; a lack of landmarks, lots of sand, and no GPS; the locals, who didn't care about borders all that much anyways, guided an official expedition into the Great Erg, "Erg" being the name for really desolate desert instead of normally desolate desert, back in 1932. On 29 December of that year the expedition found their first bit of desert glass. They were intrigued and puzzled as we still are today. The "glass" is almost pure Silica - Quartz in common parlance, and very pure Quartz at that. This chunk is fairly typical of this enigmatic material. Unlike most Tektites, Libyan glass is very transparent and in some cases, absolutely colorless, although most is like this piece, a light shade of greenish yellow. It has high levels of Iridium, which would make you assume -Tektite, but there is no impact crater that matches the material and none of the material shows typical Tektite forms - dumbells, flanges, ablation and flow surfaces, etc. This one shows the effects of countless millennia of sandblasting that has shaped and polished the piece into an eerily aesthetic form. A recent conchoidal fracture allows a clear glimpse into the mass where layers and streamers of bubbles traverse the interior. A recent (1971) expedition into the area found the remains of an airplane crash that was not discovered for over three years. This is truly a relic brought back from the edge of the world. Share the story with people you know - share the enigma.
