Description
Libyan Desert Glass - 895 GramsLibyan Desert Glass Area
Great Sand Sea
Western Desert, Egypt
This substantial cabinet-sized specimen of Libyan Desert Glass displays a vivid chartreuse-green hue with exceptional translucency, especially along its finely tapered edges. Entirely natural in form, the specimen retains unpolished, wind-worn surfaces on all faces, revealing the characteristic textures shaped by millennia of desert exposure. Weighing nearly 900 grams and formed approximately 29 million years ago-likely as a result of a high-energy meteoritic impact or atmospheric airburst-Libyan Desert Glass is a rare variety of natural silica glass (impactite). Found only in a remote region of the Great Sand Sea, its origin and rarity make it a prized material among collectors, scholars, and even ancient cultures; a carved scarab of this glass was famously discovered in Tutankhamun's tomb.
Measurements: 6.00 x 5.00 x 3.00 inches (15.24 x 12.70 x 7.62 cm), weighs 895 grams
Provenance: Property of a Distinguished Southern California Collector
