Impactites

Bicolite Tektite - 210.19 Grams
Phillippinite
Luzon, Philippines

Bicolite Tektites from the Philippines are part of a quite rare class of natural glass formed when a meteorite impact melts terrestrial material and ejects it into the atmosphere, where it cools and solidifies before returning to Earth. This substantial specimen weighs 210 grams, placing it well above the typical size range, as Philippine Tektites, known as Philippinites, are seldom found over 100 grams, with only a handful of comparable Bicolites recovered annually. The rounded and very sculptural form reflects aerodynamic shaping during atmospheric reentry, while contraction during cooling has produced deep, well-defined grooves across the surface. The exterior is richly textured, with a finely rugged character and scattered "bubble" markings that enhance both the visual complexity and scientific interest. Unusually large, and aesthetically expressive for the type, this example stands as an exceptional representation of impact-generated glass and the dynamic processes that formed it.
Measurements: 2.41 x 2.34 x 2.00 inches (6.12 x 5.95 x 5.07 cm), weighs 210.19 grams
