Description
NWA 2737 Martian Meteorite - Main MassMartian (chassignite)
Morocco
Found: 2000
Not since the namesake fall of the Chassignite Martian Meteorite variety fell in Chassigny, France, back in 1815 has another occurred until "Diderot" now classified as NWA 2737 in 2000 hit Morocco. This is a supremely important meteorite, nicknamed for 18th Century Philosopher Denis Diderot, and represents the MAIN MASS of this incredible variety that even NASA and museums do not have! Weighing a robust 185.6 grams, this relatively substantial piece accounts for some 30 percent of the total known weight of this meteorite of 611 grams. A very rare Martian Meteorite, which, in itself, is a rather finite group, this amazing specimen is appropriately dark and mysterious. The cut and polished window face offers some black and white contrast on its overall charcoal surface, and the natural exterior has a rugged yet almost fibrous quality. The truly exceptional SNC has a crystallization "age" dating back 1.36 billion years as well as images on the NASA website. The rarity of this incomparable meteorite cannot be overstated. One of the most important meteorite specimens on the planet, this one, from Mars, is beyond museum-quality.
Overall Measurements: 2.65 x 2.01 x 1.60 inches (6.72 x 5.10 x 4.06 cm), weighs 185.6 grams
[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
