    Complete Meteorite from the Planet Mars-NWA 8716 "Jrifiya"

    Meteorites from Mars are among the most exotic substances on Earth-less than 300 pounds (136 kg) are known to exist, and a substantial fraction of this amount is unavailable to the general public. Martian origin is determined by scientists with membership in the Meteoritical Society. Such claims are then peer reviewed by the Society's Nomenclature Committee. In addition to the more arcane markers, Martian Meteorites exhibit an unusually young crystalline age (indicating that they cannot be from asteroids, which all cooled many billions of years ago), and many contain water-bearing minerals (consistent with the evidence of water having been on Mars). In 1995, tiny amounts of gas found in tiny bubbles in glassy inclusions of two suspected Martian Meteorites were analyzed-and it was found to match perfectly with the signature of the Martian atmosphere as reported by the Viking probes NASA sent to Mars. As is the case with lunar Meteorites, the delivery mechanism is believed to be an asteroid impact that jettisoned material off the Martian surface and into an Earth-intersecting orbit. NWA 8716 (known in the field as "Jrifiya") is the 8716th Meteorite to be catalogued following its recovery in the North West African (NWA) grid of the Sahara Desert-and is specifically from Morocco. This gently scalloped, olive-hued mass is stippled with charcoal-hued accents and accompanied by the published abstract on NWA 8716 in the Meteoritical Bulletin, the scientific journal of record, along with a Letter of Authenticity.
    Overall Measurements: 1.75 x 1.5 x 1.33 inches (4.44 x 3.81 x 3.37 cm), weighs 37.59 gm (1.32 oz.)
