NWA 10253 - A Piece of the Moon - Accompanied by Scientific Documentation: First Public Offering of a New Lunar Meteorite
Lunar Feldspathic Breccia - The Moon
    Northwest Africa

Now offered is a pocket-sized lunar breccia-a specimen of the Moon launched off the lunar surface following an asteroid impact. Samples of the Moon are among the rarest objects on Earth. Authenticated by one of the world's leading experts in the identification of lunar samples, Dr. Carl Agee of the Institute of Meteoritics at the University of New Mexico, this is the first public offering of NWA 10253. The scientific abstract, of the Meteoritical Bulletin, accompanies this Lot.

Moon rocks are readily identifiable by their highly specific geological, mineralogical, chemical, and radiation signatures. Lunar minerals were formed in a weak gravitational field in the absence of water and free oxygen, and then altered through exposure to cosmic radiation. The minerals comprising the Moon's crust are limited, and the most common of Earth's minerals are not found on the Moon. Lunar specimens contain gases originating from the solar wind with isotope ratios that are markedly different than the same gases found on Earth. This particular lunar sample is a heterogeneous polymict breccia consisting of numerous microgabbro clasts, shock melt pools and veins, fragmental plagioclase, pyroxene and Olivine.

When asteroids strike the Moon's surface, chunks of the Moon are launched into space in much the same way that dust is launched into the air when a child jumps on his bed. One merely needs to view the craters on the Moon to see evidence of such asteroid impacts. Less than 0.2% of all meteorites are lunar in origin. Every single lunar meteorite recovery to date, whose total weight is less than 250 pounds, has been from a desert where such meteorites are more readily identified (including the cold desert of Antarctica, where precipitation is negligible). This particular meteorite would never have been found had there not been somewhat larger meteorites found in the same area, the news of which prompted a team of meteorite hunters to painstakingly canvass the region.

Determined to have been laying in the Sahara Desert for at least several hundred years, now offered is a pocketful of wonder...a piece of the Moon.
    Overall Measurements: 1.7 x 1.1 x 0.7 inches (4.3 x 2.9 x 1.8 cm), weighs 24.97 gm (0.88 oz.)
