    LUNAR

NWA 10178 - Complete Slice of a Moon Rock with Macovich Collection Provenance
Troctolitic granulitic lunar breccia - The Moon
    The Sahara Desert

NWA 10178 was the 10,178th meteorite to be recovered from the Northwest African grid of the Sahara Desert to be analyzed by scientists. Recovered by trained desert nomads, this is a complete slice of that meteorite. Found in early 2015, NWA 10178 has been authenticated by Dr. Tony Irving, one of the world's foremost experts in meteorite classification. The scientific abstract on NWA 10178 which appeared in the publication of scientific record, the Meteoritical Bulletin, accompanies this Lot.

Moon rocks are readily identifiable by their highly specific geological, mineralogical, chemical, and radiation signatures. Lunar minerals were formed in a weak gravitational field in the absence of water and free oxygen and then altered through exposure to cosmic radiation. The minerals comprising the Moon's crust are limited, and the most common of Earth's minerals are not found on the Moon. Lunar specimens contain gases originating from the solar wind with isotope ratios that are markedly different than the same gases found on Earth.

Unlike the other lunar specimen in this catalog, the pocket-sized feldspathic breccia, this specimen is from a much larger fine-grained meteorite which had been repeatedly pulverized and melted by asteroid impacts prior to ejection off the lunar surface and, as a result, features abundant anorthite and veinlets of green glass, along with Olivine, orthopyroxene and pigeonite with accessory chromite and troilite.

As of August 1, 2015, less than 250 pounds of meteorites originating from the Moon are known to exist-with a significant fraction of that material found by scientists in Antarctica, which is forever off-limits to the general public. With a Macovich Collection provenance, this is a superlative complete slice of one of the rarest substances on Earth: the Moon.
    Overall Measurements: 4.6 x 4.0 x 0.1 inches (11.6 x 10.3 x 0.3 cm), weighs 73.91 gm (2.60 oz.)
