Wolf Creek MeteoriteIron, IIIAB
Western Australia, Australia - (19° 18'S, 127° 46'E)
Found: 1947
The ancient Wolf Creek Crater in Western Australia is one of the oldest craters on Earth known to have produced meteorite specimens. Wolf Creek is an important spiritual site for aboriginal peoples, and the site has been depicted in many paintings and even seen in the horror franchise of the same name. Weighing 335.5 grams, this roundish example includes the hand-painted collection number "02857" on the surface of the highly textural mass, which has a chocolate brown color towards one end and a more "bleached" lighter orangey-brown hue over the majority of the metallic piece. A bonus with this iron offering is the "antique-looking" card from the U.S. National Museum, prior to it becoming the Smithsonian Institution. Now thought to date back some 120,000 years, Wolf Creek is the second oldest crater to have produced recoverable meteorite fragments, only Monturaqui in Chile being older, and is the second-largest crater, after Canyon Diablo in Arizona. Difficult to acquire, Wolf Creek is a must-have type that really has it all.
Measurements: 3.06 x 2.65 x 1.77 inches (7.78 x 6.73 x 4.49 cm), weighs 335.5 grams
Provenance: Ex. U.S. National Museum (Smithsonian Institution) #02857, The Geoff Notkin Collection
