SLICE OF GIBEON: FROM THE DESERTS OF NAMIBIA
    Iron IVA
    Gibeon, Namibia. (25° 30'S, 18° 0'E)
    Found: 1965

Namibia is a fine country as long as you remember not to drive at night, since hitting a warthog at 180 kph is like hitting a refrigerator full of bricks. Hitting an elephant isn't any better. Just ask the people who have. Driving aside, there have been numerous fine things that have come from this part of the world and Octahedrite meteorites from the Gibeon area have been some of the best. Namibia stopped exporting them some time ago and these days most on the market are coming from old collections. Gibeon meteorites were first discovered and used by Nama tribes-people who forged tools and weapons from them. Contact with German colonists with guns ended the weapons phase of that program. No one knows just how many Gibeons have been found or how many remain in a strewn field some 60 miles wide and 170 miles long. This hefty (600+ gram) complete slice of a Gibeon has been carefully sawn, ground, polished and etched to display the distinctive "crisscross" Widmanstätten pattern characteristic of Octahedrite meteorites everywhere. Overall condition is good; there is a great finish on the polished and etched areas and also a complete oxidation/fusion "rind" on all of the exposed edges.
    Overall Measurements: 7.87 x 4.33 x 0.2 inches (20 x 11 x 0.5 cm), weighs 643.5 gm (22.69 ozs.)
