Description

Sikhote-Alin Meteorite "The Flying Wing"
Iron, IIAB
Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia - (46°09'36"N, 134° 39'12"E)
Witnessed Fall: February 12, 1947, 10:30 am local time

An indisputably world-class, extremely large, and exceptional complete individual, this specimen of the Sikhote-Alin Meteorite is in the top 1% of all such material ever recovered. Clearly oriented and in the shape of a wing, this offering showcases deep well-formed overlapping regmaglypts and abundant flow lines. "The Flying Wing," as Geoff Notkin so thoughtfully nicknamed it, the specimen is enormous in size, weighing 8,141 grams (17.9 pounds) and superlative in terms of the aesthetic qualities. This monstrous example was actually used by Geoff Notkin in his official promotional photo for a number of years, and an original print of that image from 2009 is included with this Lot. Given the amazingly large, deep, and pronounced regmaglypts, coupled with the superb size, shape and form, this is an unparalleled sample.
Measurements: 10.63 x 5.12 x 4.53 inches (27.00 x 13.00 x 11.50 cm), weighs 8,141 grams (17.9 pounds)

Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection
