Description
Sikhote-Alin
Sikhote-Alin Meteorite "Shrapnel"Iron, IIAB
Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia - (46°09'36"N, 134° 39'12"E)
Witnessed Fall: February 12, 1947, 10:30 am local time
Pieces of "shrapnel" from the Sikhote-Alin Meteorite fall are fairly common - at least in smaller sizes - but large and specimen-grade examples are, in contrast, few and far between. This shard that resulted from the major bolide that exploded over Siberia, Russia, in 1947 is one such exception. Weighing an impressive 667 grams, this offering is relatively big and, of course, represents a witnessed event which makes the meteorite all the more collectible. This sizable piece of torn metal features sharp edges that resulted from the violent fragmentation associated with the extraterrestrial bombing that took place to the shock and terror of the audience the morning it occurred. This gunmetal gray metal form exhibits a striated nature to its texture and is highly dimensional with a healthy girth over the inflated midsection.
Measurements: 4.19 x 2.87 x 1.73 inches (10.63 x 7.30 x 4.39 cm), weighs 667.1 grams
