Description
Sikhote-Alin Meteorite "Shrapnel"Iron, IIAB
Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia - (46°09'36"N, 134° 39'12"E)
Witnessed Fall: February 12, 1947, 10:30 am local time.
1.69 x 1.55 x 0.79 inches (4.29 x 3.93 x 2.00 cm)
This excellent Sikhote-Alin Iron Meteorite features the rugged, sculptural surface formed during its violent descent through Earth's atmosphere. Ragged edges, flow lines, and natural thumbprints mark the dark patina-hallmarks of meteoritic material torn apart by mid-air fragmentation. Compact and weighty at 62.74 grams, the specimen sits solidly in the hand, its form dense and muscular. Recovered from the famous 1947 fall over Siberia, one of the most widely witnessed and extensively studied Iron meteorite events in history, this piece exemplifies the dramatic beauty of the extraterrestrial Iron.
