    Description

    SIKHOTE-ALIN METEORITE "SHRAPNEL"
    Iron, Coarse Octahedrite - IIAB
    Maritime Territory
    Siberia, Russia (46°09'36"N, 134°39'12"E)
Witnessed Fall: 12 February 1947 10:30 am local time
    2.23 x 1.58 x 1 inches (5.68 x 4.03 x 2.65 cm) (168 grams)

February 12, 1947 may not be an anniversary date that many people recognize, but it was the date when a huge, Iron meteorite fell in the Sikhote-Alin Mountains of Siberia, Russia. The fall was quite unique for a number of reasons including the fact that it occurred during daylight hours and it was widely witnessed. In fact, a fall of that magnitude had never been observed in recorded history! As meteorites go, Sikhote-Alin examples are about as classic and attractive as they get. This "shrapnel" piece subtly, and comprehensively, has captured the violent fragmentation associated with its impact.
