February 12, 1947 may not be an anniversary date that many people
recognize, but it was the date when a huge, Iron meteorite fell in
the Sikhote-Alin Mountains of Siberia, Russia. The fall was quite
unique for a number of reasons including the fact that it occurred
during daylight hours and it was widely witnessed. In fact, a fall
of that magnitude had never been observed in recorded history! As
meteorites go, Sikhote-Alin examples are about as classic and
attractive as they get. This "shrapnel" piece subtly, and
comprehensively, has captured the violent fragmentation associated
with its impact.
