    Iron, coarse octahedrite
    Maritime Territory, Siberia

This splendid meteorite originates from one of the most frightening phenomena ever experienced. It arrived on Earth on February 12, 1947 where it was part of the largest meteorite shower of the last several thousand years. Thousands of small specimens broke up in the upper atmosphere, and when a large mass exploded a few miles above Earth's surface, tons of shrapnel was sent hurtling onto the snowy terrain below. The local populace was terrified; from a distance of fifty miles it appeared the sky was on fire. Craters were created, trees were impaled, yet no one was injured as the impact area was unpopulated. This surprisingly heavy specimen exhibits twisting folds and deep striations on all faces except one - where the telltale thumbprints of the exterior surface of a meteorite are in evidence. This is undoubtedly from a much larger mass which exploded in the lower atmosphere - perhaps the largest mass previously referred to - as both the internal and external surface of this meteorite are visible. Had this meteorite split apart during the initial phase of its descent, the entire meteorite would be covered with the fine flight markings, but that's not the case. Testament to the monumental shearing force exerted on a large meteorite, this fascinating specimen is naturally burnished in a lustrous gunmetal patina with bronze accents. This is an exceptional example of a cataclysmic event frozen in time, from the most terrifying meteorite shower of modern times. From the Macovich Collection of Meteorites, the finest collection of aesthetic iron meteorites in the world. 158 x 111 x 123 mm (6¼ x 4½ x 4¾ inches) and 4,275 grams (9.5 pounds).
