    Iron, Coarse Octahedrite - IIAB
Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia (46o09'36"N, 134o39'12"E)

At 10:30 AM on February 12, 1947, the largest meteor shower in the history of mankind was witnessed over the Sikhote-Alin Mountains in eastern Siberia, Russia. The fireball witnessed was brighter than the Sun and was accompanied by a bright flash and deafening sounds observed for 186 miles (300 km) including a smoke trail estimated at 20 miles (32 km) long that was visible for hours in the sky. The meteor began to fragment as it entered the atmosphere, and the largest mass broke up in a violent air burst. It's estimated that some 70 tons of this material survived the fiery descent through the Earth's atmosphere to the surface which resulted in a "strewn field" that included multiple impact craters. The composition of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite is approximately 93% iron, 6% nickel and trace amounts of various other elements. It is classified as a IIAB iron, coarse octahedrite with both individual specimens that likely broke off the main mass during descent and shrapnel fragments which were either torn off or blasted apart upon impact. This classic piece is an individual regmaglypted ("thumbprinted") specimen evidencing fusion crust and atmospheric ablation. This meteorite exhibits regmaglypt "thumprinting" over its entire surface area. This piece is a dark steel gray with pewter accents. This example is virtually ideal for any collector who wants a perfectly representative sample of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite fall. This sculpture from outer space is a truly exceptional offering from one of the most iconic meteorite localities in the entire world.
    This fine specimen measures 8.25 x 4.5 x 3.5 inches (20.96 x 11.43 x 8.89 cm) and weighs 11.34 lbs (5.14 kg).
