    Iron, coarse octahedrite
    Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia
Similar to the previous lot, this sculptural example also originates from the unimaginably massive Siberian meteorite shower of February 1947. The forces exerted on this object as it rocketed through Earth's atmosphere are amply evident: blanketed with fusion crust and scores of fresh regmaglypts (the aerodynamic thumbprints which result from its fiery plunge through Earth's atmosphere), the largely flat backside of this wing-shaped meteorite is proof of it having split along a crystalline plane in the upper atmosphere as well as being oriented, a sought-after characteristic: it descended through the atmosphere without the typical spinning and tumbling of most meteorites as revealed by the smooth surface character of the reverse. Burnished in a bright patina with chrome highlights and accompanied by a custom armature, this unusual and artfully sculpted meteorite is from the most frightening meteorite shower of modern times. 155 x 129 x 63 mm (6 x 5 x 2½ inches) and 1849 grams (4 pounds).
    Provenance: Macovich Collection
