    Iron, ungrouped - Plessitic Octahedrite
    Taza, Morocco
    Found: 2001

When people think of meteorites, 9 out of 10 of people visualize a Nickel-Iron individual with cool "scoops" and regmaglypts like the ones on this NWA 859 octahedrite. The next level up in "cool" from that, is an oriented individual: one whose surface shows that instead of tumbling during entry as most bolides do, the bolide orients itself aerodynamically so that one surface is in "front" where ablative heating is most extreme. This results in a rounded front surface that "morphs" into linear features radiating back and away from the "nose" towards the rear, which is just what this example of Taza shows. Also desirable is a good patina, meaning some oxidation or fusion crust. This one has all of the aforementioned features. Bigger is better - this Taza weighs 4.843 Kilos or 10.6 pounds - hefty, but it doesn't require an engine hoist or a fork-lift. In short, although it isn't from the Moon or Mars, it is still a "pretty cool" meteorite.
    Overall Measurements: 4.50 x 6.0 x 3.88 inches (11.43 x 15.24 x 9.84 cm), weighs 4.843 kg (10 lbs..83 oz.)
