Description

Odessa Meteorite
Iron, IAB-MG
Ector County, Texas, USA - (31° 43'N, 102° 24'W)
Found: 1922

This complete individual Odessa Meteorite weighs a substantial 2,642.2 grams (5.8 pounds) and offers a lovely, natural shape with a dark, rich coloration as well as some prominent sculptural features. Another bonus attribute of this outstanding Odessa is the provenance and story behind it. Geoff Notkin acquired this specimen directly from legendary meteorite hunter Jim Pliska who began hunting the crater in 1947 with a surplus WWII mine detector and was likely one of the first people to use a metal detector to hunt for meteorites. Notkin and the late Pliska were friends, and their full story is told in Chapter 9 of Notkin's memoir Rock Star: Adventures of a Meteorite Man - of which a copy of the book accompanies this Lot. Of course, the Odessa Crater in Texas, and Meteor Crater in Arizona, are the only two where meteorites are proven to have been found. This sizable example has the provenance of a great backstory behind it.
Measurements: 5.61 x 4.68 x 2.52 inches (14.26 x 11.88 x 6.40 cm), weighs 2,642.2 grams

Provenance: Ex. James Pliska Collection, The Geoff Notkin Collection
