Description
Odessa MeteoriteIron, IAB-MG
Ector County, Texas, USA - (31° 43'N, 102° 24'W)
Found: 1922
This historic specimen from the Odessa, Texas Meteor Crater represents 737.9 grams of the iconic iron from the Lone Star State. The naturally sculptural example has a "mottled" appearance with numerous earthy tones represented over its extremely artistic shape. Accompanied by a card from the Institute of Meteoritics at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, the piece features a hand-painted collection number "K2-153" on one of its numerous broad scooped faces. This is a fine sample of an iconic variety. The Odessa Crater in Ector County, Texas, is one of only two in the United States where meteorites were proven to have been found, with the other being the Meteor Crater in Arizona. The provenance through the old collection labels and hand-painted number makes this complete individual more valuable and offers a tangible link to the past and the collectors, the researchers, and the hunters of early meteorite discoveries.
Measurements: 3.44 x 2.50 x 2.26 inches (8.74 x 6.35 x 5.74 cm), weighs 737.9 grams
Provenance: Ex. The Institute of Meteoritics University of New Mexico, Albuquerque #K2-153, The Geoff Notkin Collection
